Judiciary Square Metro Case No. 00-27
Your support is needed in opposing a proposed zoning change for the
southern half of Square 37 in the West End. This neighborhood is
exploding with million-dollar condo construction projects, and we are
the last affordable housing in the neighborhood. At risk is our
building, 2 historic townhouses, and the West End Public Library. It is
David vs. Goliath, and we could use your help. There will be a public
hearing on the issue in front of the Zoning Commission. If anyone can
come and say a few words in support of rent control, affordable housing,
inclusionary zoning, etc., it would be much appreciated. Please let me
know if you need any further info. Thanks, Deborah Akel VP,

Women’s Voices Matter: Women Elect to Speak
Monday June 7th, 8:30 am

that her love of family, joyous approach to life, and commitment to
improving our society and planet will bring the usual success, we’ve
joined her campaign, and we invite you to get on the team as well. Our
team, “Beth’s Boobs” will rendezvous on the National Mall at 7:30 on
June 5, (after you register, we’ll contact you by email to tell you the
exact location where we’ll meet) and run/walk the 5 kilometer (3.1 mile)
route. Of course, Beth, Steve and their twins—Tracy and Ginger --
will be with us. On-line registration is available only until Tue., June

No More Prisons - Exposing Brutality From Baghdad to D.C.
Tuesday June 8, 7:00 P.M.
St. Stephens Church; 16th and Newton St. NW
Politicians may express shock over the photos emerging from Abu Ghraib
Prison, but those with a first hand knowledge of the U.S. armed forces
and the prison system are all too familiar with such brutality. When Lou
Plummer left military service, the only decent job he could find in his
North Carolina home town was as a corrections officer. After 8 years, he
walked off the job in disgust at the racism he witnessed in America’s
prisons. Shujaa Graham was only 19 years old when he was sent to prison
in California in 1969. Behind bars, he became a leader in the prisoner
rights and Black liberation movement. In 1973, a corrections officer was
killed during a prison fight and Shujaa was railroaded for the crime and
sent to death row. He spent 4 years there until he was exonerated and
released. Two men, one Black one white. One a former prison guard, one a
former inmate.
They will join socialist activist Virginia Harabin in a
discussion of occupation, the criminal justice system, and resistance.

CHANGE YOUR MIND DAY
Saturday June 5th Noon to 5:30
On the Ellipse between the White House and the Washington Monument.
CYMD celebrates the teachings that show us we can “change our minds”-
that our mind states are not a given. Fear, anger and conflict are not
inevitable. We can cultivate peace, compassion and non-violence, and
change the way we live together in the world. CYMD presents the
teachings and practices of meditation, mindfulness, wisdom, and
compassion that can help transform our lives and our world. Nowhere is
this message of peace and compassion more needed than here today. From
Washington, a mentality of dividing the world into ‘good and evil’ and
’with us or against us’ has brought us into a war without end in Iraq
and beyond, divided us from our international friends, and made the
world less safe. For info, please visit www.wbpf.org.

Water Revolution in a Desert State
Thursday, June 3rd 7 PM
1201 Physics Building, Univ of MD, College Park
Rajendra Singh and his group Tarun Bharat Sangh are well-known for the
amazing turnaround they brought about in arid desert villages in Alwar
district of Rajasthan. In an area with 35 cm average annual rainfall,
they went about building small rainwater-harvesting structures called
’johads’ which helped raise the water table and regenerate watersheds.
Thousands of villagers took up the work with gusto - until now 4000
johads have been built in 750 villages. A 6500 sq.km. area which was
marked a ‘dark-zone’ for water has now been drought-proof, even while
the rest of Rajasthan and India have experienced severe drought.

Dictatorship or Democracy; A Film & Discussion on Cuba
Monday June 7th 6:45-8:45pm
733 15th St. NW, Suite 1020,
One of the most politically controversial subjects of our time is the
island of Revolutionary Cuba. While much is made to characterize Fidel
Castro and the Cuban government as an oppressive and repressive
dictatorship, a US imposed economic blockade and other unprecedented
restrictions has generally kept the people of both countries from
knowing enough about one another. A screening of the 20 minute Cuban
documentary “In Our Own Terms”, will be used to help discussion around
the misunderstandings AND realities about Cuba and US-Cuba relations. We
will address such questions as: What is the human rights situation
really like in Cuba? What is at the root of the impasse between the US
and Cuban governments? How do Cubans really feel about the US and their
own country? This will be a very interactively engaging and informative
forum you won’t want to miss! This event is Free! for more information
